My favorite book is 'The Giver'.When I saw the title of the book for the first time,
in fact, I didn't think it would give me a big impression. But, as I flipped the book page by page,I realized that it was an extraordinary book.
The story begins in a country in the future named Utopia. In Utopia, the individuality of people are eliminated and they are forced to become "unified" people. People can't see colors or hear music. They only acts systematically controlled by the Elders, who decides each and every incident of the country manipulating people. People obey the Elders with no complain because they do not have feelings, such as happiness, pain, loneliness or sadness. So, the Elders protects the people from all the violations such as war or crime. The main character of this book is Jonas. Because Jonas was selected as the receiver of the memory, he receives the memory of the past of human beings from the last receiver of the memory which is 'the giver'. With that, he is able to feel feelings, see colors, and hear music. At the end of the book, Jonas opens his eyes to a new and wonderful level of living with feelings, and he decides to leave the Utopia to give the past memories back to all of the citizens.
This book left me a lot of questions. Why would Jonas choose to leave the land while he could live a safe life? Why does humans should feel all the pains and have unpleasant memories besides just being happy and safe? I thought about the answer and came up with an idea: people in the Utopia are living very safely, but they can't enjoy living because without knowing pain and suffering, they couldn't understand the real meaning of happiness and thanksgiving. I prefer having suffering to having no feelings at all.
I believe that Jonas would have felt the same way. That is why he decided to leave the Utopia to share the real life with everyone. I believe people need to feel pain to make a progress in their lives, and the pain is a medium that helps us to understand what real happiness means.
